Two Lands, Two Languages, Two Minds

Tanya Ko Hong will read from her books, Generation One Point Five and The War Still Within. She will share her process for how non-native speakers can translate their lives into English, based on how she personally writes in both languages simultaneously. She will use her poem, “the Gap,” to share how different languages display different minds. Participants will write a short poem using “The gap” method to create their own poem. She will use her “Second Period” poem about how immigrants feel when they learn languages, and to demonstrate the importance of knowing how to help students share their stories. She will also discuss how history turns to poetry, how it affects society today, and how untold stories can be poetry with reference to excerpts from her work. This seminar is open to writers of all backgrounds, including non-poets.
